"Welcome to Afar regional State" Meet Popular Places

Erta Ale Volcano

Erta Ale (or Ertale or Irta’ale; Amharic: ኤርታሌ) is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. It is situated in the Afar Depression, a barren desert area. Erta Ale is the most active volcano in Ethiopia.

If you were alive in the 1980s when Belinda Carlisle gleefully proclaimed that “a heaven is a place on Earth” (or if you watched the best hour of modern television on Netflix at any time in the past year) it might not come as a huge surprise to learn that hell, too, is a place on Earth. Specifically, it’s located in Dallol, Ethiopia, where the average daily temperature is 94 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the hottest place in the world.

Danakil Depression

Bubbling volcanoes light up the night sky sulfurous mounds of yellow contort into otherworldly shapes, and mirages of camels cross lakes of salt. Laying 100m and more below sea level, the Danakil Depression is about the hottest and most inhospitable place on Planet Earth. It’s so surreal that it doesn’t feel like part of planet earth at all. If you want Genuine, raw adventure few corners of the globe can Mach this overwhelming wilderness.

Yangudi Rassa National Park

The Yangudi Rasa National Park in the vicinity of the Danakil depression is created to protect the Wild Ass, an endangered species, and ancestor of the domestic donkey. This semi-arid grass and tree Land Park, home to 36 mammal species and 230 bird species measures an area of 4731 sq. km.
